Yale University, School of Medicine (YSM)
Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine (PCCSM)
Yale University, School of Medicine (YSM) is a world-renowned institution for biomedical research, education, and advanced health care. Its 33 academic departments include 10 in the basic sciences, 18 in clinical fields, and 5 in public health. Yale faculty are recognized for their commitment to high impact and profound patient-relevant research. The Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine (Yale-PCCSM) is among the leading programs in the in its commitment to outstanding patient care, cutting-edge research, and education. Yale-PCCSM boasts a well-rounded research portfolio with NIH-funded researchers in most areas of lung research, including the pathogenesis, progression and outcomes of asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, acute lung injury, pulmonary vascular disease, sleep disordered breathing, and pulmonary fibrosis and ranging in disciplines from bench research to translational and clinical research, with a string focus on genomics, informatics and big data. During Dr. Kaminski, the outgoing Chief, and lead investigator on Work Package 5, research at Yale-PCCSM has undergone an unprecedented growth spurt in recent years. NIH funding per year doubled, accompanied with a three-fold increase in productivity; publications authored and co-authored by members of Yale-PCCSM. In addition to the clinical centers and programs, most relevant to AIRIS are the Center for Pulmonary Injury, Repair and Therapeutics (CPIRT) led by Dr. Kaminski, and the Center for Precision Pulmonary Medicine (P2MED) Data hub led by Dr. Yan. Teams at these Centers have been at the forefront of implementing single cell omics, big data and AI approach to the understanding of advanced parenchymal lung diseases, with unique resources like the IPF Cell Atlas.
Role within AIRIS
Within AIRIS, Dr. Naftali Kaminski is the lead investigator for Yale and the lead for Work Package 5, and Dr. Yan leads computational and AI efforts . Yale School of Medicine is a renowned center for translational research, single cell omics, computational biomedicine, translational research, and disease modelling. Yale participates with two groups with deep domain expertise in pulmonary fibrosis, mechanistic research, single cell omics, biomarker and drug discovery, computational biology and applications of GenAI models to multi‐scale modelling of health data. Yale PCCSM researchers will be leading will be leading Work Package 5, “High-impact use-cases” participating in Work Packages 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8. Additionally, the Yale team will be coordinating studies in pulmonary fibrosis, contributing to multi‐organ / multi‐disease model development, disease digital twins and supporting validation, clinical translation, and outreach and global partnerships.
